Mpaka Gives NUP Five Days to Respond to Withdrawal from Mbarara City North Race
Former National Unity Platform (NUP) flagbearer Peter Mpaka has set a Monday deadline for the party to respond to his withdrawal from the Mbarara City North race and his tentative suspension of party membership, warning that failure to act could render votes for him invalid.

Peter Mpaka, the former NUP candidate for Mbarara City North, has given the party until Monday, November 24, to formally acknowledge his withdrawal from both the race and party membership.

Speaking to reporters, Mpaka said he has yet to receive any official communication from party officials following his announcement on Monday, November 17.

“I am waiting for the party to officially communicate, perhaps even to the Electoral Commission, that they no longer want me as their candidate. Otherwise, my name could still appear on the ballot, but votes cast would effectively be wasted,” Mpaka said.

Mpaka explained that he had communicated his concerns internally to the party Secretary General, spokesperson, and national treasurer, highlighting the lack of support in campaign materials and feedback.

“I have not abandoned the party. I have tentatively withdrawn my membership while giving them a chance to address my grievances. If they choose to ignore this, I am ready to return to my teaching career,” he said.

The former lecturer and activist emphasized that the withdrawal is not a rejection of NUP, but a stand against insufficient support and communication.

He urged the party to engage with him and other candidates to reconcile differences and strengthen the campaign.

Mpaka had been preparing to contest against eight other candidates, including those from NRM, DP, PFF, and independent aspirants.

His decision comes amid claims of inadequate backing from the party, particularly in the provision of campaign materials and open communication.
